The Hupfel Brewery operated under various names from 1854 to 1938. My great-grandfather, Leonhard Bauernfeind, was the brewmaster from about 1890 until his death in 1908. The Hupfel company operated two brewing locations, one in Manhattan on the lower east side and one in The Bronx. The huge brick brewery building in The Bronx still stands, but is in derelict condition. The company survived Prohibition by growing mushrooms in the caves they had dug into the hillside as a cool place to age their beer. I have some photos and Hupfels items.
